36-year-old Punishment Martinez has officially ended his relationship with Ring of Honor following this weekend’s television tapings in Las Vegas, PWInsider.com is reporting.
Martinez’ contract with the promotion actually expired at the end of August, and he opted to stay on for an extra month to wrap things up. After defending the ROH World TV Championship successfully at Friday’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view, he went out properly by putting over newcomer Jeff Cobb in his final match, dropping the title.
According to PWInsider’s report, Martinez wanted to set out on his own as a free agent after being featured prominently by Ring of Honor for the last few years. There has apparently been interest from WWE for some time now, and it’s expected that the two sides will be in talks shortly now that he is officially able to negotiate.
