Yesterday in Parma took place drawing of lots for Women’s World Championships. Most mysteries are revealed, we don’t know only 6 participants from NORCECA zone.
Results of drawing with host cities of each pool:
POOL A – Rome
NORCECA 2 (Dominican Republic)
POOL B – Verona
NORCECA 4 (Canada)
POOL C – Trieste
NORCECA 1 (USA)
NORCECA 6 (Mexico)
POOL D – Bari
NORCECA 3 (Puerto Rico)
NORCECA 5 (Cuba)
Teams from NORCECA are in brackets because we still don’t know qualified teams from this area. These 6 teams are top ranked in FIVB ranking and it would be a big surprise if some of them couldn’t qualify, especially USA or Dominican Republic.
Top 4 teams from each pool will play in next round.
From 16 teams (8 in Pools E and F) only 3 from each pool will go to the next round, where these teams will play in 2 pools (G and H).
2 teams from each pool will make semifinal pairs.
From pools should advance:
A: Italy, Germany, Croatia, Dominican Republic
B: Brazil, Serbia, Turkey, Bulgaria
C: USA, Russia, Thailand, Netherlands
D: China, Japan, Belgium, Azerbaijan
In each pool except D we have certain outsiders. In last pool it would be Puerto Rico with Azerbaijan, but Cuba is getting weaker year by year losing key players, which escaped.
Competition is going to be curious battle between Europe, Asia and America. It’s hard to mention all favourites, defending champion is Russia, while olympic champion is Brazil. We shouldn’t take chances away from Japan, China or USA. Serbia is also strong, while Germany is ready to beat every favourite because of being well prepared by Giovanni Guidetti. Turkey, Belgium or Dominican Republic can surprise everyone and Italy wants to prove something in front of local audience.
Get ready for grand emotions from 23th September to 12th October!
